Does ChatGPT recommend your business?

A growing number of your customers now ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity who to use, before they ever open Google. "Who is a good accountant in Randburg?" "Which web designer in Cape Town do you recommend?"

The businesses that get named are not always the biggest. They are the ones AI can easily understand: websites that say clearly what they do and where, that let AI crawlers in, and that are mentioned on other sites it trusts.

ChatGPT has also started selling ads to some markets, and they can now target your own customer lists. We wrote about what that means for South African brands here.

Three quick wins this week

  1. Check your robots.txt. Make sure it does not block GPTBot, ClaudeBot or PerplexityBot. Security plugins sometimes switch this on quietly.
  2. Write one plain sentence about your business. Who you help, what you do and where. Put it on your homepage and in your Google Business Profile.
  3. Add a short FAQ. AI assistants love clear questions and answers, because that is how people ask them things.

Our free AI visibility check asks ChatGPT what your customers ask, and shows who it recommends instead.
