For twenty years the deal was simple. You built a website, Google listed it, and people clicked through. That deal is changing. Google now puts an AI summary at the top of many searches, and millions of people ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity for recommendations instead of scrolling through links.
These tools do not make answers up from nothing. They read websites, reviews and business listings, then decide who to mention. Your website is now talking to two audiences: the people who visit it, and the AI that decides whether they ever hear about you.
What has actually changed
- Answers, not linksGoogle AI Overviews and AI Mode summarise the answer at the top of the page. Fewer people click, so the clicks you do get matter more.
- Asking, not searchingPeople type full questions into ChatGPT, like “who does affordable websites in Johannesburg?”, and get two or three names back, not ten blue links.
- Phones firstMost local searches happen on a phone. A site that is slow or awkward on mobile loses people before AI even comes into it.
- Trust signals count moreReviews, a complete Google Business Profile and consistent details across directories all help AI decide you are a safe recommendation.
Signs your website is out of date
You do not need a technical audit to spot most of these. Open your site on your phone and check:
- It takes more than a few seconds to load. Heavy images and old themes slow everything down, and slow sites get fewer visits from people and from search crawlers. Our guide to fixing heavy images is a good place to start.
- Your services are vague. If one page says “we offer a range of solutions”, an AI cannot tell what you do, where you do it or who it is for. Each main service needs its own clear page.
- Important details are hidden in images or PDFs. Prices, menus and service lists inside pictures are hard for search engines and AI to read. Put them in normal text.
- There are no answers to common questions. AI tools love a clear question and answer. A short FAQ on each key page often gets quoted directly.
- The copyright year, prices or team are out of date. Stale details make people and AI wonder if you are still trading.
- There is no structured data. Behind the scenes, schema markup tells search engines your business name, location, services and reviews in a format they understand instantly.
- Your site blocks AI crawlers. Some older settings and security plugins block the bots that ChatGPT and other tools use to read websites. If they cannot read you, they cannot recommend you.
How does your website score?
Our free website check tests mobile speed, SEO basics, security and whether Google can find your pages, then explains every fix in plain language. It takes about 30 seconds.
Run the free website checkWhat an AI ready website looks like
The good news is that what helps AI also helps real customers. An AI ready website is simply a clear, fast, honest one:
- One clear page per service and area. Say exactly what you do and where, in the words your customers use. “Garden services in Fourways” beats “outdoor solutions” every time.
- Plain language answers. Add short FAQs that answer what people actually ask before they buy: price, timing, areas, guarantees.
- Structured data in the background. Business, service, FAQ and review markup, so search engines and AI read your details correctly.
- Fast and mobile first. Compressed images, a light build and big, easy buttons for calling and WhatsApp.
- Proof everywhere. Real reviews, photos of your work and a complete Google Business Profile that matches your website exactly.
- Fresh content. Updated prices, recent projects and the occasional helpful article show you are active.
Your website is now the hub for automation
AI is not only changing how people find you. It is changing what happens after they do. Enquiry forms can reply instantly, chat assistants can answer common questions at 10pm, and follow up emails can go out without anyone remembering to send them. All of that needs a website built to plug into it. An old site with a basic contact form is the bottleneck.
That is why we build websites with the next step in mind, from WhatsApp buttons and booking forms to AI automation that handles the busywork.

Run the free AI checkUpdate or rebuild?
If your site is less than three years old, loads quickly and you can edit it easily, an update is usually enough: clearer service pages, FAQs, structured data and a speed tidy up. Our AI visibility work focuses on exactly this.
If it is older, slow on phones, built on a heavy page builder or simply does not reflect your business any more, a rebuild is often quicker and better value. Our website packages start from R3 500 for a one page website, with SEO basics and structured data included from day one.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a new website to show up in ChatGPT and Google AI?
Not always. Many websites can be fixed with clearer service pages, FAQs, structured data and faster loading. If your site is very old, built on a page builder that hides text, or does not work well on phones, a rebuild is usually quicker and cheaper than patching it.
How do AI tools decide which businesses to recommend?
They look for clear, consistent and trustworthy information: what you do, where you work, what customers say about you, and whether other sites mention you. A website that spells this out in plain language, backed by reviews and a complete Google Business Profile, gives them what they need.
How often should I update my website?
Check your key pages every few months and refresh anything out of date, such as prices, services, team and trading hours. Most small business websites need a proper redesign every three to five years as devices, search and customer habits change.
What does an AI ready website cost?
Our websites start from R3 500 for a one page site and R7 500 for a business website of up to five pages, with SEO basics and structured data included. Larger sites and online stores are quoted after a short chat.
